Cuevas del Almanzora

Cuevas del Almanzora full of culture

Cuevas Del Almanzora: Lively and full of culture.

The Mediterranean Sea washes the coast along a stretch of 14 kilometres and inland for 263 square kilometres.

The present site of Cuevas had been chosen by different cultures and civilizations that have written Mediterranean history since long ago, Greeks, Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Iberians, Romans, Goths, Arabs and Christians, many of whom have crossed swords for its dominion and control.

This land has been densely populated since the Paleolithic and Neolithic periods as the excavated sites in Fuente Alamo, and Villaricos show.

In 1488 Christian troops conquered the town without a struggle, the Arabs were subjugated and forced to espouse the Christian faith until their revolt and subsequent expulsion in 1570. Pirates were involved in the sacking of Cuevas in 1573.

Cuevas Today

Today Cuevas is a thriving market and farming town with a booming economy and rapid economic growth.

It is still possible to travel through three centuries of art and nineteenth-century architecture by just visiting some of the local historic sites:

The castle of Marques De Los Velez, The parish church of Cuevas, The monuments of our religious heritage, vestiges of a mining past, wandering though the old town with its Moorish Architecture,

Keeping with tradition there are many Feasts, Festivals and Processions.

Cuevas is also the capital of motorcycling hosting the world supercross championships

There have been many sporting venues built and left for public use since Cuevas also hosted many events in the 2006 Mediterranean games.

It is well worth the drive to upto Cuevas dam, although you will not see much water, there you can look down on the purpose built lake which was used for the rowing championships during the Mediterranean Games and the surrounding countryside.
